I have been using gold gesso both with Plein Aire paintings and ,in the studio, with work done from drawings. I am exploring using the gold to add a sense of reverence for those aspects of the world we treasure. I often paint on black gesso. I also like to use oil bars for emphasis., or spontaneity.
I have been working in watercolor as well. The outdoors calls and watercolors are easy to carry.
a variety of objects:
These represent an effort to pull together experience, memory and maybe change. Some are objects. Some are books, like The Dictionary Game. Some are short videos.
Collage is a process of transforming emotions into a visual vocabulary. I have done many related to personal emotions. Currently I am working on the effects of climate change.
When one thing is built on another, it is a palimpsest. Gardens can be built, one on another. Buildings can be on top of old buildings. These are paintings built on a Tibetan Prayer flag print I made on canvas or wood from a woodblock I have from Tibet. The combination of suggestive words and an image from the landscape are poetic. They remind me how fragile any life system is.
Simple drawings done either with sumi ink or black walnut ink with pastel to emphasize the colors. I make black walnut ink from fallen walnuts in my yard. A winter in water, then run through a sieve with gum arabic and clove oil added make a sepia ink.
Drawing promotes understanding. For the drawer, that is. These are drawings I made for newspaper articles in the 1980's. These are some I particularly liked. I continue to draw.
Based on a simplification of observed natural forms, plants and animals. I made these in the 1980’s. Those pictured here were painted on walls.
